Cover Crops and Soil Moisture Conservation

Cover crops, when used as a mulch, can decrease evaporation of soil moisture. This is due to the shading provided by the mulch, which keeps the soil cooler, and the shelter it provides from drying winds. Note however, that before the cover crop is killed, it will usually use more soil moisture than would evaporate from a fallow field. Therefore, the net gain by using a cover crop mulch will depend on the site's rainfall patterns. This is mainly a concern in dryland situations.
