Cover Crops for Irrigated Farms of the Columbia Basin
Columbia Basin farmers are blessed with plentiful water, productive soils and a mild climate which combine to produce high yields for diverse cropping systems. However, we face several unique challenges to sustained agricultural production in this region:
-
Sandy soils, prone to erosion and leaching, can challenge the best farmer's skills in soil/water conservation and nutrient management.
-
Frequent tillage and low residue crops can degrade the desert soils, already low in organic matter.
-
Serious pests are becoming harder to manage, and the number of management options is decreasing.
The information on this website will show you how cover crops can help you solve these and other problems with the goal of helping you stay in business while conserving the soil and water quality of the Columbia Basin.
