6.  Test a few options

Don't turn large acreage over to any cover crop without first testing several options on a small scale.  The best approach is to test several promising cover crops on a limited scale, then choose one or two of the most promising for larger trials the following year.  At first, choose from among the Top Cover Crop Species for the Columbia Basin.  Most of these cover crops have been used by other farmers in the Columbia Basin.  If you can, contact a farmer who is experienced with the cover crop you plan to use.  They can be the best source of information in many cases.
