High Residue Farming under Irrigation

2007 Workshop

Irrigated farmers looking to reduce irrigation, fuel, and labor costs should consider attending the upcoming workshop, “High Residue Farming under Irrigation.”  This daylong workshop will be held on Wednesday, December 5, starting at 8:30 am in room 1870 of the ATEC Building, Big Bend Community College, Moses Lake.

Farming systems that maintain high amounts of residue on the soil, such as no-till, strip-till, and mulch-till, have been shown to reduce fuel use and machinery wear, cut labor costs, reduce irrigation water requirements, and increase winter water storage.  They are highly developed in the Midwest and in other countries including Canada and Brazil.  The focus of this workshop will be on systems that will work on irrigated farms.

The 2007 workshop will feature sessions on equipment for high residue farming, strip-tillage basics and local experience with strip-tillage.  Hal Collins, a USDA soil microbiologist will speak on what happens to the soil when you stop tilling it.  Attendees will also learn about the starter fertilizers and their placement from Rich Koenig, WSU soil scientist.  Finally, Tom Barcellos, California’s 2006 Conservation Tillage Farmer Innovator will share how he implements both no-till and strip-till practices to produce forage for his dairy near Tipton, California.

Online registration (credit card payment only) now available.  To request a brochure and registration form (payment by check), contact WSU Extension, Grant-Adams Area, at 509-754-2011 ext. 413, or by email to Andy McGuire.  The registration fee for the workshop, which includes lunch and refreshments, is $25 before November 27th and $35 thereafter.

High Residue Farming Discussion Breakfasts

WSU Extension will hold several breakfast discussion sessions this winter for those practicing or just interested in high residue farming under irrigation.  The first will be Wednesday, Nov. 14th, 7:30 a.m. at Bob’s Café, at I-90 and Hwy. 17 in Moses Lake.  This will be an open discussion of the 2007 growing season and how no-till and strip-tilled crops yielded, problems and lessons learned.  Come to learn and discuss these new farming systems, rolls and coffee provided.  Future discussions are scheduled for January 9th, February 13th and March 12th, depending on interest.
